Discussion and application of current management practices in horse reproduction. Lectures included breeding methods and foaling procedures, safety and biosecurity, health and nutrition, reproductive anatomy and hormones, behavior and handling.  Hands on activities included labor watching, artificial insemination, semen collection, and foal handling.

An introductory class in wildlife rehabilitation, including both classroom lessons and a wet lab using cadavers.  Topics covered included an introduction to wildlife rehabilitation, basic anatomy and physiology, calculating fluid therapy, handling and physical restraint, stress and the basic shock cycle, initial care and physical examinations, standards for housing, zoonoses, euthanasia, and release criteria.

Basic techniques of equine training with two year old horses.  Trained the horses to perform various maneuvers including halter breaking, saddling, longing, driving, and riding.

SAFE CAPTURE INTERNATIONAL: CHEMICAL IMMOBILIZATION OF ANIMALS

March 14 - 15, 2016

Certification and training in the chemical immobilization of wildlife, including protocols for dosages, injection methods, monitoring, and safety.  Specific topics covered include:

  • Custom drug combinations and formulations, proper injection sites to ensure rapid drug absorption and effects, capture strategies to minimize capture stress on the animal, and procedural stress of the operator, drug delivery technology

  • Advantages and disadvantages of the various commercially available darting systems, techniques for sighting in dart projectors/tranquilizer guns to ensure accurate, atraumatic dart delivery, practical, field-tested modifications necessary for accurate and consistent results with currently manufactured darting systems and radiotracking devices

  • Drug dosage recommendations, dosage calculations, how to re-dose animals incompletely immobilized on approach, "superconcentrated" drugs: Where to obtain and how to use them to give you a faster knockdown, and allow you to use smaller, less traumatic darts

  • Post Immobilization Care of Animals: How to ensure the correct level of immobilization for an approach which affords operator safety and minimizes stress to the animal, medical monitoring

  • Assessment techniques to ensure the immobilized animal stays physiologically stable throughout the procedure, medical emergencies associated with capture and handling, and  accidental human exposure to immobilizing medications

An introductory course on the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations.  Topics covered included the three sides of the fire triangle, the environmental factors of fuels, weather and topography that affect the start and spread of wildland fire, and contributing factors that indicate the potential for increased fire behavior that may compromise safety
